The Health Effects Of Old Mattresses

Sleep is one of the most important things that we do in our lives. While it does not seem like anything major, we spend half of our life sleeping. Not only that, but without taking the time to sleep, our next few days fall apart completely. You have to ensure that you get the proper amount of sleep every night.

It is not just about how much sleep you get though, it is also about the conditions in which you are sleeping in. Many people purchase a mattress and use the same one for an extremely long amount of time. While mattresses are built to last, they do have to be replaced at some point. Not only that but using an old mattress can come with some severe health effects. Here are some of the negative health effects that come with using an old mattress.

Poor Body Support

When you first buy a mattress, it is firm and able to support your body in all the right ways. What people don’t realize is that each time you lay on your mattress, it wears it out and lowers the amount of support it gives.

While this amount is minuscule, it definitely does add up over many years of usage. If you compare your mattress now as to what it was when you first got it, you will notice a huge difference. The experts at this URL talk about how it is important to pick up a new mattress as soon as you start to feel like it is not supporting you. But what exactly is wrong with having an old mattress that doesn’t support you as well?

One of the biggest downsides to this is that you are going to wake up with much more back pain and pain in your body. Because the mattress is not supporting you, your body will fall into strange positions and as a result, your muscles will be stiff and sore the morning after. If this continues, this muscle pain will begin to last for several days and even need a physiotherapist to fix. Don’t let a degrading mattress be the cause of your health degrading.

Allergies and Insects

Another issue people don’t think about with old mattresses is the allergies and the irritations they can cause. Anything that has been in a house for a long period will start to become dirty and worn out. This is especially true with a mattress as it has an extremely large surface area. One of the worst things that can happen is a large number of dust mites can fall into your bed and cause a problem.

Because of this, you will find yourself sneezing in your bed, getting runny noses, and even watery eyes. If you find yourself constantly waking up every morning with a stuffy nose, it might be a sign that your bed is full of dust mites. You can take your mattress in for deep cleaning, but this can be extremely expensive and is surely not worth all of the trouble. If it gets that bad, the best bang for your buck would be to invest in a new mattress for your house.

It gets even worse though. Bed bugs can start to take over the bed and a standard old mattress can contain up to ten million microscopic bugs. This number increases as the mattress get older and older as well. These bugs can contribute to even further health problems. Dead skin and body oil become factors as well. Replace the old mattress with a new one and get yourself a proper night’s sleep.

Lack of Sleep

Aside from waking up with body pain and sniffles, you are going to notice that you are not getting any sleep in your bed. Even if you slept for twelve hours, it can feel like you only got an hour or two. This is due to the deformation of the bed through all of its usages. The only way to fix this is to look into a new bed. A day or two of sleep deprivation won’t hurt, but if it is a constant issue, you can expect to have health problems down the road.

All of these health problems can add up to cause serious issues in your life. Avoid them by constantly checking up on your mattress and ensuring that you are getting the sleep that you need. A bad mattress can always be replaced, but parts of your body that suffer pain cannot be. What do you look for in a bed?
