When it comes to weight loss there are a few things we know for sure. It can be immensely rewarding, it can improve your health, and it can be hard as hell. It’s true. Anyone who has ever tried to lose a substantial amount of weight or just those last ten pounds will likely agree that it wasn’t easy. A weight loss journey can test you physically, mentally, and emotionally. And, you need the right set of tools and the right amount of guidance to help you stay the course, stay positive, and reach your goals. So, we knew that to make a great weight loss program, we needed one of the best in the industry to help us design a plan that you’ll want to stick with. Introducing Lose It With Latreal, featuring celebrity trainer Latreal Mitchell!
If you don’t know her from her many features in the pages of top fitness and health magazines, you might recognize her from her years as a figure competitor where she mastered the ability to transform her body with fitness and proper nutrition. Latreal is one of the top fitness trainers in the industry and has helped the likes of Michael Strahan, Alex Rodriguez, and Terry Crews stay in shape.
And she’s not just here to help you lose weight. Latreal is deeply dedicated to the health of all her clients—a group that now includes you! “The most rewarding part of my job is seeing my clients get results and watching their self-confidence go through the roof,” she tells Aaptiv. “It’s a blessing to coach them through the process and help them either get off of a medication, get rid of chronic pain or illness, or even, yes, get into a pair of jeans they haven’t worn in years.”
In addition to her work as a personal trainer, she is also the founder and CEO of the Fitness Bunch Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting childhood obesity with education via summer camps and afterschool programs.
And, for the next six weeks, she’ll be your guide through her Lose It With Latreal program.
About the Program
Here are the basics: The program covers six weeks and each week includes four strength training workouts. The workouts are only 20-30 minutes so you can fit them into even the busiest schedule. On your off-days from the program, you’re encouraged to perform an Aaptiv cardio workout of your choice. But keeping the main programming strictly strength training was intentional. “It’s easy to think that the best way to lose weight is cardio, but muscle burns fat,” Latreal says. “If we focus on total body workouts daily and incorporate the big muscle groups, we’re going to burn more calories, have a better physical appearance, and increase bone density.”
When we asked Latreal to create a weight loss program for our members, she made sure to focus on a few key things: commitment and benchmarking. Commitment is, of course, one of the hardest elements of any fitness routine. “A lot of people think that because they wake up and decide to get healthy that the results will come in a week,” Latreal says. “It doesn’t happen like that. You need to slowly get rid of old eating habits, incorporate new workout habits, and change your inner conversations.”
To help you stay committed to this program and your health, each week begins with a motivational talk centered on a different theme. Throughout the six weeks, you’ll hear Latreal discuss building a quality support system, practicing self-love, embracing change, and many other key components that add up to a healthy lifestyle. “I’m a true believer that to transform your body, you have to transform your mind,” she says. “I’ve incorporated weekly motivation because if the mind is in the right space, the body will follow. I want Aaptiv members to embrace self-love, feel stronger, love the way they look naked, and I want exercise to become an outlet to get rid of the crap in our daily lives.”
Weight loss is all about the gradual changes we experience physically and mentally. That’s where benchmarking, or measuring your progress, comes in. At the beginning of the Lose It With Latreal program, you’re asked to complete a benchmark workout that involves performing various bodyweight exercises for a set duration. Keep track of how many reps you can complete. Then, at the end of the program, you’re asked to complete the same benchmark workout to see how you’ve improved over the course of six weeks. Progress is more than pounds shed. And, while, yes, this is a weight loss program, it’s about gaining strength and confidence over anything else.
