Taking Your First Pilates Class? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Expert tips and insights from an Aaptiv Pilates Trainer

Thinking of trying Pilates for the first time? You’re not alone! Pilates has become a go-to workout for building strength, improving flexibility, and enhancing overall body awareness. But stepping into your first class can feel a little intimidating if you don’t know what to expect.

To help you feel prepared (and excited), we’ve gathered expert advice from Aaptiv Pilates trainer, Joseph Quinn, to guide you through your first mat session.

What to expect in your first Pilates class?

“Pilates is three things: Strength, Length, and Control” says certified Pilates instructor, Joseph Quinn. “Pilates is a series of movements, not poses. These mindful movements are all about precision. They build awareness and always work your core.”

In a mat class, you’ll perform exercises on the floor using just a mat for support. While it may seem simple, don’t underestimate the challenge! “Even basic movements can feel surprisingly tough because they engage muscles you don’t typically use,” Joseph adds.

Do You Need to Be Flexible?

A common misconception about Pilates is that you need to have dancer-like flexibility to participate. Joseph Quinn reassures beginners: “Pilates is for everyone, no matter your fitness level or flexibility. It’s about meeting your body where it’s at and gradually improving over time.”

If you’re feeling stiff, don’t worry—Pilates can actually help increase your range of motion. “Think of it as a tool to build flexibility rather than a requirement,” Joseph explains.

What Should You Bring?

First things first, you’ll need a mat. Many studios provide them, but if you prefer your own, look for a non-slip mat designed for Pilates or yoga. “Wear comfortable, form-fitting clothes,” advises Joseph. “Avoid baggy outfits, as they can make it harder for instructors to see your alignment.”

He also recommends bringing water and a small towel. “Pilates isn’t a high-sweat workout like running, but you’ll still feel like you’ve worked hard by the end of the class.”

How to Prepare Mentally

Pilates requires concentration, so come to class ready to focus on yourself,” You’ll be using your breath to guide your movements and engaging your core muscles throughout the session. “It’s not just a physical workout—it’s a mental one too,”  he explains.

Joseph adds, “Don’t be afraid to ask questions or let your instructor know you’re new. Pilates instructors are there to help you succeed, and they’ll happily offer modifications if needed.

The Biggest Benefit

One of the best things about Pilates? It’s a workout that keeps on giving. “Pilates strengthens your core, improves posture, and helps with everyday movements like bending, lifting, or even sitting for long periods,” says Joseph.

“It’s not just about how you look—Pilates makes you feel better in your body,” he emphasizes. After just a few sessions, many people notice reduced tension, better balance, and improved coordination.

Your first Pilates mat class is a chance to explore a new way of moving and connecting with your body. “Be patient with yourself,” Joseph advises. “Nobody is perfect on their first try. The key is consistency and enjoying the process.”

Ready to roll out your mat? With these tips (and a little encouragement from the pros), you’re all set to step into your first class with confidence. Remember: Pilates is a journey, so take it one breath and one movement at a time.
