When Employees Work in Pain: The Overlooked Cost of MSK Problems

Many workplaces struggle with pain issues. Employees often push through discomfort instead of taking time off, whether it’s a stiff neck from computer work, a sore lower back from sitting most of the day, tight shoulders, aching knees, or persistent wrist pain. These everyday musculoskeletal (MSK) issues may seem minor, but they can drain focus, energy, and productivity. For employers, these small aches could signal a much bigger workplace issue.

The Productivity Cost Hiding in Plain Sight

MSK pain and injuries affect employees across nearly every industry and occupation, impacting roughly half of adults in the U.S. They are among the most common workplace health problems,  accounting for about 27% of work-related illnesses and injuries, and leading to an estimated 6.6 million lost workdays each year.

But absenteeism is only part of the story. Common musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), such as sprains, strains, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and back pain, are a leading cause of workplace productivity loss, contributing to both absenteeism and presenteeism, when employees are at work but limited by physical discomfort.

For many employees, this means staying on the job but not working at their best. They may shift in their chair to find a comfortable position or try to ignore nagging back pain, which distracts from concentration. Tasks take longer. Energy fades. Over time, these small disruptions add up to meaningful productivity loss.

How Work Is Creating More MSK Problems

The human body was not designed for hours of sitting or repetitive computer work. Yet many jobs require exactly that – long periods in static positions that strain the neck, back, shoulders, and wrists.

Without regular movement and strength training, muscles weaken, joints stiffen, and discomfort becomes more likely. In many cases, workplace MSK problems are not sudden injuries. Instead, they develop gradually through everyday work habits.

Another trend contributing to the rise in MSK issues is the aging workforce. MSK conditions, such as osteoarthritis, become more common with age, leading more employees to experience mobility challenges later in their careers.

Additionally, a lack of time (often called time poverty) contributes to the problem. Busy schedules and responsibilities make it hard for many people to exercise regularly or build the strength and mobility needed to support healthy movement.

The result is a perfect storm: sedentary work, less movement, and an aging workforce all contribute to increasing MSK problems.

Preventing MSK Problems Before They Escalate

The good news is that many musculoskeletal problems can be prevented or managed by focusing on movement health. This helps people move comfortably, efficiently, and without pain throughout the day.

Improving mobility, stability, and strength can reduce everyday discomfort while supporting long-term fitness. Even small actions can make a difference. Short mobility sessions, stretching routines, and targeted strengthening exercises can help offset the effects of sedentary or repetitive work. And employees who can move comfortably tend to focus better, have more energy, and experience fewer interruptions during the workday.
