The Best Cities for Runners to Vacation

Ready to hit the trails in a new city this summer? Check out the best cities for runners!

Getting out and hitting the pavement is a runner’s dream especially when it involves discovering a new path or trail. And, summer is the perfect time to hit the road and get your run in in a whole new place.

Since you can take Aaptiv wherever you go, you know you’re in for a great workout and a welcome change of scenery. But, what are the best cities to travel to?

Some cities offer up fabulous scenic trails or awesome beaches, while others are blessed with temperate weather year-round. We combed through city guides, spoke to city officials, and scoured top ten lists and found seven of the best cities worth lacing up your sneakers for.

New York City, NY (duh, we know!)

Sure, sure the Big Apple is on every list of best cities, but it’s for good reason! NYC is known for its annual marathon that spans the five boroughs.

Plus, it counts majestic Central Park—which features among other things a six mile loop that locals and out-of-towners love traverse—among its treasures. Stay nearby at the Courtyard by Marriott—it allows you to embrace the landscape and also enjoy landmark views.

If you feel that the park wasn’t enough of a challenge, then head on over to the Hudson River Path which is almost 16 miles long. The flat terrain makes it easy to run while you enjoy the beautiful skyline.

Edgartown, Massachusetts

If small-town charm is calling you this summer, make Edgartown, Massachusetts, your top pick. You can visit Oak Bluffs which has running trails ranging from two miles to ten miles long.

Get the full effect by staying at the Harbor View Hotel, which is located right off some of the running trails, and has three trails of its own located on the property.

Pebble Beach, CA

California’s coastline is known for its breathtaking views but it also has one of the most scenic routes in the world—Monterey Peninsula’s 17-Mile Drive.

It runs from Pebble Beach to Pacific Grove. Enjoy all the coast has to offer and stay at the legendary Pebble Beach Resorts because after that challenging run you will need to visit the spa for a Sports Bodywork massage or land yourself in the steam room and/or whirlpool to get your muscles by at one.

Telluride, CO

Though Colorado is often associated with being one of the best cities in the country for skiing. But, it can also be a runner’s paradise.

So much so that marathoners and other athletes train there in droves to take on the challenge of high altitudes. Training at high elevations can cause our bodies to produce extra red blood cells that may help increase overall endurance.

If you’re ready for that challenge, famed Telluride resort has mountain trails that guide you to waterfalls or paths for running. At the end of your day head to Invited Home’s rental properties and book a stay at Cabin on the Ridge which comes complete with an oxygen system that mimics being at a lower altitude and can help you deal with the effects of the change in altitude.

Chicago, IL

Chicago though quite windy is perfect for running because of its flat terrain. Head over to Lake Michigan’s 18-mile path and enter into one of their weekend races.

Round your visit out by staying in the heart of it all at the Chicago Marriott Downtown located on the famous Magnificent Mile. The views from the hotel are worth the trip to Oprah’s city.

Charleston, SC

If you are up for a little southern exposure, head down to Charleston, South Carolina. Check into the Belmond Charleston Place then make your way to the route along the battery (rainbow row) and by waterfront park where you can see antebellum mansions.

Once you have had your fill have the resort’s spa treat your feet to a body melting reflexology session. Your arches will thank you!

Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

Even though you will have to hop on a plane to enjoy Old San Juan, it’s so worth it. If you have ever run on the sand you know that it gives quite the workout.

Where other than Puerto Rico can you enjoy 270 miles of beaches, rainforests, dry forest and beautiful waterfalls where you can cool off, without needing a passport?

Stay at the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino where you can enjoy a round of golf or views of the El Yunque Rain Forest.

Now that you have your list, be sure to bring Aaptiv with you to get a great workout while you’re there!
